Dr. Herbert R. Edwards, Longtime Tuberculosis Foe < NewYorkTimes.com >
Dr. Herbert R. Edwards, a physician long active in the campaign against tuberculosis, died Saturday at the Veterans Administration Hospital in West Haven, Conn. He was 85 years old and lived in New Haven.
Dr. Edwards headed the tuberculosis bureau of the city's Health Department from 1934 to 1947, when he was appointed executive director of the New York Tuberculosis and Health Association. In 1955 he Joined Yale University as associate professor of medicine and public health. He retired in 1959.
He studied medicine in California and by 1928 was medical field secretary of the National Tuberculosis Association.,
Surviving are his wife, the former Carol Kemerer; two sons, R. Kemerer, and David, and seven grandchildren.
