DR. H. G. LOCKE DIES FOLLOWING 9 - DAY ILLNESS
Leading Neurologist of Central new York Stricken at Marcellus.
HAD BRILLIANT CAREER
Founded Psychopathic Hospital and Led Fight for Backward Children.
Dr. Hersey Good Locke, a leading neurologist of Central New York, died at 3:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the Syracuse Memorial hospital.
Dr. Locke was stricken at his summer home at Marcellus about nine days ago. he was taken to the hospital immediately, improved for a few days and his recovery appeared certain. On Thursday he suffered a relapse which left him greatly weakened.
The funeral will be in private at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the home at Marcellus, the Rev. H. H. Hadley, rector of St. Pauls church, directing. Burial will be in the family plot in Highland cemetery, Marcellus.
Dr. Locke was born on the plantation of his grandfather, John Donaldson Locke, Oldham county, Kentucky, in 1860.
Was Harvard Graduate.
At the close of the Civil war in 1865, the family removed to Boston. Dr.Locke received his early education in the Boston Latin Preparatory school and Hopkinson, famous Boston finishing school.
He entered Harvard and graduated with a master of arts degree with the class of 1886. He graduated with honors as doctor of medicine from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1887.
In the competitive examination, Dr. Locke headed the list for internship at New York City hospital. Later he was intern at Roosevelt hospital, New York.
Dr. Locke took a post-graduate course in the University of Heidelberg, Germany. Upon his return from Europe he practiced medicine in New York. In 1898 he came to Syracuse.
In 1902 he married Mrs. Julia Williams Emory, widow of Dennis McCarthy Emory, and daughter of Judge D. S. Williams, Ocala, Fla.
He is survived by his wife, three daughters, Miss Anne Le Baron Locke, Miss Dorothy Donaldson Locke and Miss Julia Townsend Locke.
Famer Throughout State.
For the past two years, Dr. Locke has been president of the Harvard club of Syracuse.
He was professor of neuro-psychiatry at the College of Medicine, Syracuse university, and neurologist and psychiatrist in Syracuse Memorial hospital and the Syracuse Free Dispensary.
Formerly he was neurologist to the Hospital of the Good Shepherd.
Dr. Locke was the founder of the Psychopathic hospital and was in charge of the institution for many years.
Some years ago Dr. Locke started a movement to procure better education facilities for backward children. He accomplished much in that field.
Dr. Locke was consulting neurologist of the Syracuse clinic and was widely known throughout New York State as an expert in medico-legal cases.
Published Many Papers.
For years, Dr. Locke served as consulting neurologist and psychiatrist for St. Lawrence State hospital at Ogdensburg.
He served as contract-surgeon at Camp Syracuse during the war.
During his career Dr. Locke has prepared and presented many papers on mental and nervous diseases. Many of these have been reprinted and are now widely circulated.
