Dr. Hugh William Caffey, was a real Civil War hero.
He sustained at least four gunshot wounds while serving as both a Private and as an Acting Asst. Surgeon in the Provisional Army of the Confederate States. He served in Company G, 44th Alabama Infatry Regiment. He went before an Army Board of Medical Examination and passed the test that was necessary to receive an official appointment as an Asst. Surgeon. Once appointed, he served in that capacity until he was paroled by the United States Army at the end of the war.
He was married at least two times, once before the Civil War and again soon after the war.
