Dr. Isaac Garrett Smedley

He was graduated at Swarthmore College and from the Hahnemann Medical College, Phila.; was gynaecologist to the Hahnemann and St. Luke's Hospitals, consulting gynaecologist to the Wilmington Homeopathic Hospital, and to the Reading Homeopathic Hospital, and a member of the State Board of medical examiners from its organization. He settled at 1319 Arch St., removing in 1888 to 1705 Arch St. His death was accidental and sudden. He had gone to Bryn Mawr to visit the patient of another physician, in consultation, and on attempting to board a moving train to return he lost his balance and in falling fractured his skull, from which death occurred in a few minutes.

Son of Thomas G Smedley and Elizabeth Garrett.

Earned a BS from Swarthmore in 1876 and graduated from the Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia in 1880. He was a resident for one year at Hahnemann and then did an 18 month residency at hospitals in London. Upon his return he set up his practice in Philadelphia. He was a gynecologist at Hahnemann and St Luke's Hospitals and a consulting gynecologist to Wilmington Homeopathic Hospital and to Reading Hospital. He was a founding member of the State Board of Examiners, and was a member of many clubs, including the Historical Club.

On 19 Aug 1886 he was married to Elizabeth Kirk Hallowell, daughter of John Elgar Hallowell and Anna Willson Townsend. They became the parents of Florence Elizabeth (Clifford Vernon), Eleanor (who died in infancy) and Caroline Hallowell (Guy Blandin Colburn).

Dr Smedley died when he was hurrying to board a moving train at Bryn Mawr station; he lost his grip on the rail, was spun around and struck his head on a step. He fell onto the platform unconscious and died a few minutes later in the waiting room, the result of a fractured skull.
