Dr. Jacob Draper Haller, MD

Jacob Haller, M. D., born November 29, 1796, at York, Pennsylvania, died January 28, 1877, married February 7, 1882 to Priscilla Malinda Nye, the daughter of Captain, John P. Nye and his wife of Wytheville, Virginia. Captain John P. Nye represented Wythe County in the Virginia Legislature, about the year 1825. During the Civil War Dr. Haller served as surgeon in the Confederate Army. Records in the War Department in Washington, D.C. show that he was Surgeon, Volunteer Forces of Virginia and was appointed May 4, 1861. He was assigned to Kentucky Battalion and Baltimore Volunteers at Harper's Ferry. He was appointed Surgeon, Provisional Army, Confederate States, October 2, 1861. He died on Sunday January 28, 1877 and is buried alongside his wife in the East End Cemetery at Wytheville, Virginia. At the time of his death he was thought to be the oldest living Mason in Virginia. An obituary in the Wytheville Enterprise at the time of his death states that his practice, though not lucrative on account of his extremely moderate fees and gratuitous service, was extensive and arduous. At one time during his life his practice extended from Fincastle in Virginia to Knoxville, Tennessee and embraced parts of West Virginia.
