Pioneers of Old Hopewell
Roger Parke, who was popularly known among the pioneers as "Old Doctor Parks," studied the Indian practice of medicine with the old squaws and medicine men, and the early settlers came to him for many miles around, his treatment being much the same as that practiced by Dr. Jacob Tidd in later years, who, it is said had many of the recipes of Doctor Parke [the earliest doctor to come to Old Hopewell in 1697].
"A History of East Amwell - 1700 - 1800" by the East Amwell Bicentennial Committee. Page 69 mentions a Jacob TIDD: The first doctor of record to practise in the township was Dr. George Andrew Viesselius known as the "red cheeked doctor" because he had "a conjenital affection," probably a birthmark, on one side of his face. He came to America in 1749 from Holland and settled near Three Bridges, he married a Miss Psyche Gardiner and had five children. He was...a very energetic and successful doctor. After he died in 1767, his widow, with the aid of a boy, Jacob TIDD, who was bound to the family, was often called on to give medical assistance to area resi- dents and Jacob TIDD eventually set up his own medical business after his term of servitude was finished.
"The History of Hunterdon and Somerset Counties" by J. P. Snell men- tions that Jacob TIDD assisted Dr. Viesselius. He "prepared washes, salves, plasters, etc.". [Page 219]
Dr. John Tidd administered Jacob Tidd's estate. The debts exceeded goods, so land was sold to make up the difference. No relations are mentioned since died intestate as well. Inventory is quite interesting. One of the single most valuable items was a commentary on the bible. It was worth $14 and a mare was worth $40 and a bedstead was $17.
