In 1821 he was offered 80 pounds a year by Lord Charles Somerset and embarked in Feb 1822 and arrived in the Cape on 2 July 1822.. He was to start schools in the Cape. A number of Scottish teachers were brought out [William Robertson who became the pastor in Swellendam; William Dawson; Andrew Murray, who became the Dutch Reformed pastor in Graaff-Reinet; Robert Blair; Archibald Brown and Rattray]
James Rose-Innes was sent to Uitenhage, where he established a leading school. He later went to Cape Town and the newly established S A College School.
Note: Charles Somerset planned on Anglicising the Dutch and decreed that, as from 1 January 1827 "all judicial acts and proceedings were to be in English".
