Dr. John Fonerden was a graduate of the University of MD medical school at 19 years of age. In his career he dealt with the insane and led the state’s mental hospital that became Spring Grove in the 20th century. He was a friend and associate and advisor to Johns Hopkins and a trustee on the formative committee that led the effort to form that institution. Dr. Fonerden did not live to see this aspect of his work come to fruition.
