About Lieut. James Fonerden

The relationship between the Fonerden (Von Erden) family and the van Beuren family was quite close in this era. James married a Spingler and their daughter married Michael M. van Beuren b. 1800

James' sister Frances married Englebert (Egbert) van Beuren (van Bueren). This Engelbert's son, Michael E. van Beuren, (b.1817) fought in the war with Mexico and later died at the hand of Comanche Indians near Corpus Christi Texas.

also from the Cornelius Von Erden Mitchell genealogy we have:

"Supplementing this record we have from the records of Trinity Church Parish in New York City as published in The New York Genealogical & Biographical Record, Vol. LXXXI, at page 97 that Eliza M. Spingler (Named therein Elizabeth M. Spingler) married James Fonerden on August 10th 1809. Excerpts from the records of St. Mark's Church in the Bouwerie shows that James Fonerden was buried in vault 49 of that church on January 23rd 1838. If this excerpt is correct he died on January 21st not February 21st.

James Fonerden married on August 10, 1809, Eliza Spingler (31), a daughter of Christopher Henry Spingler (62). She was born November 28, 1792 and died June 21, 1866 (?)."

"A letter from the Adjutant General's office of the U.S. War Dept. to (Cornelius Von Erden Mitchell) states that James Fonerdon (sic) was appointed 1st Lieut. in the 5th U.S. Infantry on May 3, 1808; accepted appointment May 16th, 1808 and resigned April 16, 1809.
"The current 5th Infantry traces its actual origins to the oldest of these regiments, the 4th, which was organized in May–June 1808. After three years' garrison duty in New England, the 4th assembled near Philadelphia in the spring of 1811."

Letter from James M. Fonerden to his father A. Fonerden at 54 Market Street, Baltimore, dated at Cantwell's Bridge Rendezvous July 7, 1808.

Dear Father I have as yet but slightly entered upon the duties of my profession havng but about fourteen recruits at this place, but expect seven or eight more this day from the lower county where Cap't Dale has been himself recruiting, and left a sargeant on that duty. We have not as yet got the men in Barracks, the articles not having been forwarded by the contractor for military equipments but expect them in a few days when the necessary discipline will commence. {the letter continues at https://dcms.lds.org/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?dps_pid=IE923431 page 450}
