There is an entry for John Nunn Eagle in the Dictionary of South African Biography - vol V, page 228.

The entry says that he was born at Coggeshall, Essex, England on the 13.9.1822 and died in Philippolis on the 26.3.1900. He completed his medical studies in England and emigrated to South Africa in 1849, reaching Port Natal on 3.11.1849 aboard the Dreadnought. During the first weeks after their arrival, he and his family lived in a wooden hut on the beach front and his wife gave birth to their third child.

He trekked across the Drakensburg mountains and settled in Colesburg as acting district surgeon. Following a dispute with the Cape medical committee who refused to acknowledge his medical qualifications, he moved to the Free State as medical officer at Fauresmith in 1854. On 29.3.1863, when his name appeared in the medical register, he became the first medical practitioner in the OFS.

In 1862 he took up residence in Philippolis where, except for a short interruption when he worked on the claims at Pniel in 1870, he remained the doctor for the rest of his life.

He served as medical officer in the Free State forces during the second Basuto War (1865 - 1866)and on 3.4.1866 he pronounced Mosheshwe paramount chief of the Basuto, medically unfit to attend the signing of the peace treaty in person.

He died from cancer of the Kidneys in March 1900.

He was married to Emily ASHFORD and had a son and seven daughters.
