John Edward Wilkinson, Jr., son of John Edward Wilkinson M.D. and the former Mary Eugenia Gaston, was born May 19th 1878 in Gastonburg, Alabama. John was the fourth of five children; whose family moved to Prattville when John was two.
John, Jr. was educated at the local academy. At the age of 22, John graduated from the University of the South Medical College, with a degrees in medicine and pharmacy. From 1900 until 1905, Dr. Wilkinson, Jr. practiced medicine in Brierfield, Alabama, but returned home to Prattville where he continued practicing for the next fifty years. John, Jr. and his father operated Wilkinson Drug Store for over 72 years; having the distinction of the oldest family-owned pharmacy in the nation.
John, Jr. was married twice; first on November 7th 1907 to Louise Marie Smith with whom he had one daughter: Mary Louise Wilkinson Farrior (1919-1999). After a divorce, he married Alice Booth on June 10th 1924. This union had no children.
Dr. John Edward Wilkinson, Jr. departed this life on the 2nd day of June 1963 in the place he called home, Prattville Alabama; at the age of 85 years, 1 month and 13 days. He was laid to rest near his parents in Oak Hill Cemetery.
