notes

1833, 13 Jun: Dr Joesph BOSWELL, who lived on Short Street in Lexington, KY, was a popular and busy physician, who owned a farm outside of Lexington, and his practice took him frequently into the country, sometimes on horseback, as it was often necessary to negotiate the back-country roads. It was on one of those trips, during the great cholera epidemic in Lexington, that he was stricken and died. As Dr. BOSWELL was returning from his farm on 13 Jun, he became violently ill. In great pain, and able to diagnose his own condition, he tied his horse to a fence rail, walked up onto the porch of a farmhouse, and knocked. The farmer's wife answered the door. "I am going to die, " Dr. BOSWELL told the startled woman. "Here is my wallet. Please notify my family." Having spoken these words, he collapsed on the porch. The farmer's wife called her husband, but the two of them, realizing that their visitor was dead, and fearing contagion, dragged the body some distance from the house and buried it. The spot was marked with a stake, but a search for the body was not made until some months later - Lexington being in a state of turmoil - and by that time pigs or other domestic animals had displaced the marker, so the impromptu grave for Dr. BOSWELL was never found. (4a) Dr. BOSWELL contacted an illness which he knew would be fatal, so he shut himself in a cabin on his property to protect his family and lived alone with meals provided until his death.
