ARKANSAS CITY TRAVELER - obit MAX MAYO MILLER Max Mayo Miller, physician and surgeon, was born at Diller, Nebraska, March 9, 1890, and died at Ar-kansas City, Kansas, November 6, 1931. His father, John William Miller, is a physician of German ances-try. His mother's maiden name was Ada Hawkins. Dr. Miller was graduated from high school at Mound City, Missouri, in 1907, received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Missouri in 1911 and his Master of Arts degree in 1912. His fraternity was Phi Beta Pi. During 1911-12 he was a student instructor at the University of Missouri. and the following year professor of anatomy at the University of Louisville. He had a teaching fellowship at Harvard University during 1913-14-15, and during the school year of 1915-16, was assistant professor of anatomy at Vanderbilt University, at Nashville, Tennessee. In 1915 Dr. Miller was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy from Harvard University, and in 1918 his medical degree from Northwestern. The summers of 1916 and 1917 he was a student at the University of Chicago. He was instructor in anatomy at Northwestern during 1916. 1917 and 1918, and in 1919 became a member of the staff of Halstead Hospital at Halstead, Kansas. At the time of his death he was in active practice, and surgeon to the Santa Fe Railroad. Dr. Miller was a Republican. On August 19, 1914, he was married to Fauna Hazel White at Drexel, Missouri, her birth place. She is the daughter of John Harlow and Katherine (Gillette) White. There are three children: Max, born July 30, 1915: Theodore, August 28, 1920; and William, Feb-ruary 9, 1923. Dr. Miller was a member of the American Legion, the Kansas State and Cowley County Medical Societies, the Kiwanis Club (president 1929), the Modern Wood-men of America, the Royal Neighbors of America, the Masons, the Arkansas City Country Club, and the First Presbyterian Church. also FINAL TRIBUTE TO DR. MILLER Funeral Rites Are Held Today for A.C. Physician Funeral services for Dr. M.M. Miller who died at his home here Friday night, were held at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon in the First Presbyterian Church, of which Dr. Miller was a member. Dr. Frederick Maier officiated. Members of the Cowley County Medical Society and members of the local Kiwanis club attended the services in separate bodies and there were also several members of Crescent Lodge, A.F. and A.M., in attendance. Mrs. Guy Curfman sang "The Reason Why" and "When I Shall Fall Asleep" with Prof. E.M. Druley as accompanist. The Pallbearers The five [?] pallbearers were Boyd Mohler, Harley Stephens, D.V. Burton, Harold Lauchs, Harry V. Howard and Tom Pringle. Honorary pallbearers were Dr, B.C. Geeslin, Dr. L.M. Beatson, Dr. Milton Hahn, Dr. J. L. Wentworth, Dr. E.H. Clayton, all of this city, and Dr. M.S. Dunbar of Winfield. Nurses of Mercy Hospital also attended in a body. All the drug stores in the city were closed during the hour of the services. Relatives of Dr. and Mrs. Miller from out of town here to attend the services include Dr. and Mrs. J.W. Miller, Mound City, Mo.; Dr. and Mrs. R.R. Miller and son Abe, Mound City; Mr. and Mrs. J. Harlow White, Drexel Mo.; Mr. and Mrs. R.E. White, Kansas City; Mr. and Mrs. W.E. White, Tulsa, and friends from out of the city, Mr. and Mrs. S.A. PHYSICIAN, TAKEN IN DEATH Dies of Heart Failure at His Home Last Night HAD BEEN ILL Neglected His Own Health While Discharging His Duties Max Mayo Miller, 41 years old, one of Arkansas City's most prominent and successful physicians and surgeons, died unexpectedly at 8:30 o'clock last night at his home, 624 North Second Street. While Dr. Miller had been ill for two months, his condition was not thought to be dangerous.He was taken quite ill Thursday night and only yesterday submitted to a thorough examination for the purpose of ascertaining his real ailments. While in the discharge of his duties in helping others, he had neglected himself, relatives and friends said today and his condition was found, after the examination, to be critical. Died of Heart Failure The cause of death is given as heart failure, due to a malignant growth in the chest.Mrs. Miller and other members of the family were in the home when Dr. Miller died.Dr. Miller, who had been practicing here for 12 years, was born in Diller, Nebr., and when quite young, went to Mound City, Mo. Later, he went to Drexel, Mo., where Mrs. Miller's parents now reside. He came to Arkansas City from Halstead, where he was located one year.Dr. Miller received his A.B. and A.M degrees from the University of Missouri, his Ph.D. degree from Harvard and his M.D. degree from Northwestern University, Chicago.He had been prominent in church, social and civic affairs while in this city, and was always in line for his share of work to be done for the good of the city and community.He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and was a past president of the Kiwanis club, in which he had been prominent in child welfare work. Dr. Miller's father also is a physician and surgeon. No Funeral Arrangements Dr. Miller is survived by the wife, three sons, Max Mayo Jr., 16; Ted, 11; and Billy, 8 his parents, Dr. and Mrs. J.W. Miller, Mound City, Mo., and a brother, Dr. R. R. Miller, Drexel, who resided here several years and was associated with Max Miller in his practice.Dr. Miller was a member of the Mercy hospital staff. He also was a member of the local A.F. and A.M. lodge, No. 133, Masonic.Funeral services are to be held at 2:30 o'clock Monday afternoon in the First Presbyterian Church. Dr. Frederick Maier, pastor will officiate. Place of internment had not been decided on today. Oldroyd is in charge.
