Né à Hohenelbe (Bohême) le 10 janvier 1889, mort à Bloomington (USA, Indiana) le 8 janvier 1972.

Fils d'un papetier. De 1909 à 1915 il étudie le droit à l'Université allemande de Prague, la musicologie auprès de Heinrich. Rietsch (Löwy) (1830-1927) et la composition avec Gehard von Keussler (1874-1949) et à Vienne avec Guido Adler (1855-1941).

En 1913 il soutient sa thèse de doctorat en droit, et en 1915 celle de philosophie, Studien zur Spielarie nebst einem Beitr. zur Geschichte der österr. Suitenkompos. im 17. Jh. à prague.

Il sert l'armée Autrichienne pendant le première guerre mondiale. En 1919 il ets assistant et passe son habilitation à Prague, sur les musiques de danse dans la seconde moiutié du XVIIe siècle à Vienne. Il est chargé de cours puis responsable du séminaire de musicologie.

Il épouse en 1928 la pianiste Gertrud Hutter (1905-1952). De 1933 à 1939 il est directeur de la musique de la Radio allemande de Prague. En 1939 il émigre aux États-Unis, où il a un poste d'enseignement au Westminster Choir College (Princeton). Il est également chargé de cours à New York et à Philadelphie.

En 1946 il est nommé professeur de musicologie à Bloomington, à l'Université d'Indiania. Il ets aussi chargé de cours au Conservatoire de Cincinnati et à la Roosevelt Univiversity de Chicago.

En 1959 il est professeur émérite de l'Université d'Indiana mais assure ses cours magistraux jusqu'en 1960.

Il a écrit plus de 30 livres et plus de 300 communications et articles, de nombreuses critiques de livres et de disques.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind., Jan. — Dr. Paul Nettl, emeritus professor of musicology at Indiana University and the author of many books on music and musicians, died today. He would have been 83 years old Monday.

Won Reputation as Specialist Dr. Nettl retired as professor In 1964 after having served on the Indiana faculty since 1946. His studies and numerous essays, as well as many books in German, won him a reputation as a specialist in every phase of Bohemian and Moravian music.

Besides his German works, Dr. Nettl's books included “The Story of Dance Music,” 1947; “Luther and Music” and “The Book of Musical Documents,” 1948; “The Other Casanova,” 1950; “Forgotten Musicians” of the 17th and 18th centuries, 1951; “Beethoven Encylopedia,” 1956; “Mozart and Masonry,” 1957 and “The Dance and Classical Music,” 1963.

Dr. Nettl was born in Hohenelbe, Bohemia, Jan. 10, 1889, received a Doctor of Laws degree in Prague in 1913, then studied musicology with Heinrich Rietsch and received Ph.D. degree in 1915.

In November, 1939, he came to the United States and joined the faculty of the Westminster Choir School in Princeton, N. J.

Earlier, he had been music editor of the paper, Deutsche Arbeit, and instructor at the Musicological Institute of Germany, University in Prague. Before coming to the United States, he was named music director of the radio broadcasting station, Prague II.

Surviving are his widow, Margaret von Gutfeld Nettl; son, Dr. Bruno Nettl, professor of music and anthropolgy at the University of Illinois; a brother, Anthony; a stepson, Robert von Gutfeld; a stepdaughter, Gabriele Rosenfeld, and two grandchildren.
