About Dr. Samuel (Samu) Kux

He received his M.D. in 1846. In that year 21 of 49 graduates in medicine were Jewish.
I (James William Anderson) put the following in the profile of his daughter-in-law, Alma Kux, but it should also be here. Samuel Kux is the paternal grandfather of my maternal grandfather, Louis Kux.

Through the acquaintance of a Kux from another branch of the Kux family, I was reminded many times since my entrance in 1875. I heard how, it seemed, at the end of the 1700s or beginning of the 1800s a man named Wolf Kux came to Liptos St. Miklosh. [now Liptovsky Mikulas, in Slovakia; her version is closest to the Hungarian name: Liptoszentmiklos]. He was a barber. He also used cupping glasses and applied leeches. He had probably given all sorts of things to him and others that he tried to help, so that he surely earned the name Wolf Roffe [Roffe is Hebrew for doctor]. He had three sons, who easily could be traceable to today in his descendants. One of them, Mandel, my husband’s grandfather, studied to be a doctor. He settled in Nomesto [now Nameszto, 40 k. northwest of Liptovsky Mikulas]. I often hear from him that he was called toward Krakau [Crakow]. He had 13 children, nine sons and three daughters. The oldest and one of the youngest were doctors. They were already real medical doctors. My late husband’s father, Dr. Samuel Kux, was one of the first to graduate from the University of Vienna. His name is or perhaps was? inscribed in the entrance hall of the university. Also, from a professor here we heard that he had a textbook from him. The other brothers all learned trades, and one of them I met several times in America.
[Note: With the help of a researcher in Vienna, we learned that Samuel Kux graduated from the Medical School of the University of Vienna in 1846. We obtained a copy of his doctoral dissertation, on the therapeutic use of heat and cold, written in Latin. We have not learned of a textbook written by him. The researcher could not find information about his name having been inscribed in the entrance hall of the university. A relative recalls another relative who said in the 1950s he had seen the inscription during a visit to Vienna. In speaking of his being one of the first graduates, Alma Kux probably meant one of the first Jewish graduates, but she is incorrect. The first Jewish graduates were much earlier. We also learned there were quite a few Jewish graduates in his class. In 1846, 21 out of 49 graduates (MD) were Jewish.
