STEPHEN ARNOLD DOUGLAS was born in 1782 in Stephentown, NY, on the Asa Douglas homestead. He married SALLIE FISKE in 1811. Stephen died in Brandon, VT in 1813, while holding his two month old son in his arms.

2) Sarah b. October 29, 1811 in Brandon; m. Julius Granger son of Gehazi Granger, who later married Douglas' mother in November 1830.

Stephen Arnold Douglas, statesman, known as “little giant,” Sec of State of IL, judge of supreme court, mbr of congress 1843, 1844, & senate 1847; in 1852, rec'd lrgest number of votes of any candidate for Democratic nomination for Presidency but was not nominated; returned to congress, & again, in 1856, unsuccessful candidate for Presidency. In 1858, defeated Abraham Lincoln to senate from Illinois, & in 1860 was defeated by Lincoln for Presidency. His last coherent words (1861) expressed an ardent wish for “honor & prosperity of his country & the defeat & dispersion of her enemies.”
