Introduction
Syed Hassan Al-Junied was born on 18 April 1900 in Singapore. He was educated at Victoria Institution (Syed Alwi Road) and then Raffles Institution, both in Singapore.
Undergraduate Medical Education
He was a medical graduate of King Edward VII College of Medicine, with L.M.S. diploma in 1927
Postgraduate Studies
He was a graduate of the University of Edinburgh and University of Glasgow in 1929.
Private Practice
Dr S. H. Aljunied was a private practitioner in Singapore. His clinic was the Arab Dispensary at 108 Rochore Rd, Singapore. He attended to medical examination of boxers and weight-lifters before each fight/competition.
Dr Syed Hassan Al-Junied and Dr H. S. Moonshi were involved with the Reformatory for Singapore in 1941 (10503/32). This activity came under the Reformatories and Industrial Schools Ordinance (Chapter 138). The Chairman was the District Judge and First Magistrate. The members were Mr Lim Kim Seng JP, Mr E. Baker, Dr H. S. Moonshi JP, Dr Cheong Chee Hai JP, Mr Lim Bock Kee JP, Shaik Salim bin Taha Mattar, Dr V. K. Samy, Dr Syed Hassan Al Junied, Mr Lee Chin Tuan JP, Mr M. V. Pillai, Mr Ng Sen Choy JP, Mr J. Duncan Roberts, Tuan Imam Haji Abbas bin Haji Mohamed Taha JP, Dr Loh Poon Lip, Rev. Fu Lee, and the Hon’ble the Director of Medical Services, S.S.
Political Involvement
He was involved in Singapore politics. He belonged to the Progressive party and represented East Ward (whose symbol was a knife). In May 1949, Dr S. H. Al-Junied, Dr Abdul Samat, and Mr S. A. Mohd Ali had abstained from voting at the end of the debate on birth control.
Contributions to Society
Dr Syed Hassan Al-Junied held various positions when serving his society. They are as follows:
1. Patron of the Singapore Harbour Board Boys’ Club. 2. Member of the Singapore Malay Teachers’ Union. 3. President of the Indonesian Red Cross. 4. Vice-President of the Singapore Amateur Football Association. 5. Official of the Malay Football Association. 6. Official of the Singapore Boxing Board of Control. 7. Official of the Malay Welfare Council. 8. Patron of a party held in honour of the Fitzgeralds.
