About Dr Wayne Hobbs
Dr. Wayne Hobbs, 234 Bentley Ave., Sharon, an ordained Episcopal deacon and local physician died at 10:44 p.m. Sunday (9-1-91) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 81.
Dr. Hobbs was born Dec. 30, 1909, in Philadelphia to Charles Wesley and Elizabeth Young Kauffman Hobbs.
He was a graduate of Hamilton (Mass.) High School and earned a bachelor's degree at Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass, in 1931. He graduated from Harvard Medical School four years later.
Dr. Hobbs did his internship and residency at Abington (Pa.) Memorial Hospital from 1935 to 1937. He was in private practice in Swampscott, Mass., from 1937 to 1942 and was on the staff at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was also affiliated with Salem (Mass.) Hospital.
From 1942 to 1946, he served with the Navy Medical Corps as a lieutenant commander in New Guinea and Trinidad.
In 1949, he did his post-graduate cardiology studies at Tufts University Medical School, Medford, Mass.
Later he was in private practice in Hatboro, Pa. and was affiliated with Abington Memorial Hospital as a visiting physician. He was on the staff of the University of Pennsylvania Graduate Hospital and on the faculty of the Graduate School of Medicine.
From 1952 to 1974, he had a private practice in Sharon. He was a former president of Sharon Medical Clinic; a diplomat in the American Board of Internal Medicine; and a visiting physician at the then Sharon General Hospital.
Dr. Hobbs was a past president of the Sharon hospital's medical staff, a consulting internist at the former Grove City Hospital, a member of Mercer County and Pennsylvania medical societies and a past president of Mercer County Heart Association.
He had been director of medical services at Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff from 1974 to 1976.
He was ordained in December 1968 as a deacon in the ministry of the Episcopal Church, Diocese of Erie, and served as assistant rector at St. John's Church, Sharon.
Dr. Hobbs was a former board member of Sharon Country Club and a member of W.K. Bray Lodge 410, Free and Accepted Masons.
His wife, the former Kathryn Lawrence Johnson, whom he married Dec. 22, 1935, Died Nov. 2, 1987.
Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Victor A. (Gail Wesley) Wild, Marblehead, Mass; two sons, Jonathan Charles Hobbs, Sharon, and the Rev. William Battersday Hobbs, rector of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Southbridge, Mass.; a sister, Barbara, wife of Dr. John Wilson Henderson, Worchester, Mass.; and three grandchildren.
A daughter, Elizabeth Hobbs, died in 1968.
Burial in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Hermitage.
