Ernst G. Lowenthal was born in Cologne, Germany in 1904.
After receiving his doctorate in sociology, he worked for the Central Association of German Citizens of the Jewish Faith from 1929 to 1938.
He edited the Journal for the History of the Jews in Germany.
In 1939 he immigrated to England. A year after the war he returned to Germany, where among other roles, he served as director of the Jewish Relief Unit in the British Occupation Zone from 1947 to 1948.
