In 1903, the government moved its Western Navajo Agency headquarters to Tuba City, an oasis fed by a tributary of the Little Colorado River. The city’s name belied its size; at the time, it consisted only of a trading post and a handful of buildings left by earlier Mormon settlers.
In 1904, the government began constructing a new boarding school to replace the Blue Canyon school: The new Tuba City Boarding School was comprised of three imposing buildings, arranged symmetrically in an architectural style typical of federal buildings of the time.

Biography:
Drag Toes was born c. 1857 based on the statement that she was 73 in the 1930 census. Her parents are unknown. She was the mother of Zonna Yazzi, also a patient inmate at the Canton Asylum, and identified as a Southern Navajo, which might be indicative of her father. See: Zonna Yazza

From the book Vanished in Hiawatha by Carla Joinson, Drag Toes was admitted to the Canton Asylum on January 21, 1920, and diagnosed with infantile spastic diplegia (Infantile spastic diplegia, also known as spastic diplegia or infantile diplegia, is a type of paralysis that affects muscle groups on both sides of the body. It's a type of cerebral palsy, a neurological condition that affects muscle coordination and body movements.).

According to the letter dated February 17, 1934, Dr. L.L. Culp to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, Drag Toes died at the Canton Asylum on February 24, 1932, and was buried in the Canton Hiawatha Cemetery tier 3 plot 51.

Her profile is part of the The Canton Asylum One Place Study.

Research Notes:
-Drag Toes does not show up in Indian census reports because the Western Navajo did not have their first census until 1929
-Carla Joinson in Vanished in Hiawatha says she is the mother of Zonna Yazza admitted to the Canton Asylum on April 29, 1919 (before her mother), suffering from epilepsy and indicates she was a Southern Navajo.
