About Dru de Balloon

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Ballon-4

Cawley reports that the name of Hamelin and Wynebald's father -- "Dru" -- appears only in one location, the Historia fundationis cum fundatoris genealogia of the priory of Abergavenny (which was founded by Hamelin). Cawley adds that this work is dateable to the early 14th century, the date of the last events recorded. [4] Cawley kindly reports that "The accuracy of the Historia regarding the early generations of the family cannot be corroborated from other sources, and its reference to the family of the “comtes de l´Isle” who have not otherwise been identified does not inspire complete confidence." Less kindly, Round calls it "the mendacious narrative of the Abergavenny monks".[5]

The name of Hamelin and Winebaud's father appears in only one source -- the narrative of the Abergavenny monks -- and it appears there as Dru.

While Cawley on MEDLANDS "standarizes" Dru to Dreux de Ballon[3] and Cockayne in Complete Peerage proposes "Drew" as the correct English form, [6] Dru being the earliest use, it is used here.

Hamelin de Ballon (or Baalun, Baalan, Balun, Balodun, Balon, etc.)[1] (died 5 March 1105/6) was an early Norman Baron and the first Baron Abergavenny and Lord of Over Gwent and Abergavenny, titles granted shortly after the Norman conquest of England and Wales by William the Conqueror; he also served William Rufus. Origin

He was from France, from the ancient manor of Ballon, today a commune in the department of Sarthe in the modern region of Pays-de-la-Loire. This was in the ancient province of Maine which was invaded and conquered by Duke William of Normandy in the early 1060s, just before his invasion of England. He was a son of Drogo (or Dru) de Ballon and was accompanied to England by his brothers, Wynebald de Ballon and Wynoc....

Chapter 8. LORDS of ABERGAVENNY

The family of Hamelin Lord of Abergavenny originated in Ballon in Maine, which is located about 20 kilometres north of the city of Le Mans. The name Wionec (“Wyonecum”) given by Dreux de Baladon to his second son suggests a Breton family connection: the name roots “Gue-“ or “Guy-“ (equivalent to “Wio-“) and “-ec” are found among the Breton nobility in the 9th and 10th centuries (see BRITTANY). However, the name could have been introduced into the family from Dreux´s wife whose identity is not known. The early history of this family is based only on the Historia fundationis cum fundatoris genealogia of the priory of Abergavenny which is dateable to the early 14th century, the date of the last events recorded[807]. The accuracy of the Historia regarding the early generations of the family cannot be corroborated from other sources, and its reference to the family of the “comtes de l´Isle” who have not otherwise been identified does not inspire complete confidence.

Ballon

The first members of this family to have come to England were Wynebald de Ballon (c.1058–c.1126), and his brother Hamelin de Ballon (c.1060-c.1090 or 1105/6), sons of Drogo (or Dru) de Ballon, lord of the castle of Ballon, 12 miles north of Le Mans, capital of the ancient province of Maine. From its strength the castle was known as "The Gateway to Maine". Ballon is today a French commune, in the department of Sarthe (72), in the modern region of Pays-de-la-Loire. Maine was invaded and conquered by William Duke of Normandy in the early 1060s, just prior to his invasion of England
