As the president, CEO, and founder of the Hagadone Corporation, he had holdings in publishing as well as hotel, resort, and casino development. At the center of North Idaho's convention and visitor business you'll discover The Coeur d'Alene, a five-star, four-season resort conceived, owned and operated by Hagadone Hospitality Company. The Chairmen of the Board is Duane Hagadone. The Hagadone group owns a number of other motels in the region including the University Inn in Moscow and manages the Silver Mountain Ski and Summer Resort as well as the Silver Beach Yacht club and Board Walk Marina. It also owns a 180 hole waterfront golf course with "the world's first and only floating green," a downtown shopping plaza, etc.

An article on him in the 1990 Centennial book "Here We Have Idaho; People Make the Difference," says- Standing like a captain on a ship's bridge in his glass-enclosed office jutting over the Coeur d'Alene lakefront, Duane Hagadone looks out on one side to the striking Coeur d'Alene resort that he built and on the other side across to the modest frame house where he was born, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

As owner of the Hagadone Corporation, that group is also responsible for publishing newspapers in the following area: Moses Lake, Washington, Kalispell, Montana, Sioux City, Iowa, and Libby, Montana. They also publish numerous newspapers in Idaho - the Coeur d'Alene Press, Bonner County Bee, Shoshone News Press, Bonners Ferry Herald, Priest River Times, and the Post Falls Tribune. He is also owner of This Week Magazines and Hagadone Printing in Honolulu, Hawaii, Pend Oreille Printers in Sandpoint, Hagadone Directories, Quicksilver Photography, Hagadone Creative Group, and Hagadone Investment Company all in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

Mr. Hagadone is a Past Director of Washington Water Power (now Avista), Past Director of Coeur d'Alene Mines (now Coeur), Past President of the Coeur d'Alene Chamber of Commerce, Past Chairmen of United Way Fund, Kootenai County, Idaho. He was named outstanding Young Man of the Year for Coeur d'Alene, Idaho as well as outstanding Young Man of the Year for the State of Idaho. He is a member of the University of Idaho Hall of Fame and was named Distinguished Citizen of the Year in 1988.

He has focused his entrepreneurial talents on North Idaho, not only because he is a third generation Idaho native whose grandfather was mayor of Coeur d'Alene, but also because he believes that the region, which his newspaper and hospitality empire dominates, is the "best kept secret in the U.S." The article closes as follows: Whatever projects his restless drive takes him to next Hagadone says, "They have to be fun. Otherwise, what's the point?"

In its annual list of 100 most influential Idahoans, Ridenbaugh Press of Boise names Hagadone number 15.
