Dudley was born on the 10 March 1573 at Baldwin Brightwell Oxfordshire, England. He was the son of Anthony Carleton and Joyce Goodwin. He was baptised on the 21 March 1573/4.
He was an English art collector, Diplomat and Secretary of State. In 1610 he was Knighted and he became Ambassador to the States of Venice Italy. Dudley's political career was widely acknowledged over the years, and at the same time, continued his interests in Art and the Art Trade.
Dudley returned to England in 1625 and was appointed Vice Chamberlain of the Household and a Privy Councillor.
Sir Dudley Carleton married twice. Firstly, to Anne Gerrard in November 1607, and, from what is known there were no children to this marriage. Anne died in 1627.
He then married in 1630 Anne Gleeman, who was the widow of Paul Bayning, 1st Viscount Bayning. Their only child died young. Anne died in 1639.
In July 1628 he became the 1st Viscount Dorchester.

He died on the 15 February 1632 and was buried in Westminster Abbey, where there is a large monument and effigy of Sir Dudley with a plaque describing his years of service.
