About Dudley Charles Howard Elliot

Self-penned PEN PICTURE of DUDLEY CHARLES HOWARD ELLIOT Early in 1918 DUDLEY CHARLES HOWARD ELLIOT was born in England. His only excuse is that his Australian mother was prevented by a blizzard from reaching Scotland, the home of his ancestors. His father had already been killed in Belgium as an Officer in the A.I.F., with so many of his mates. Dudley's early days were spent in the small bush town of Mendooran where rabbits were cheap tucker for the widow with no money except her war widow's pension. Fortunately Dudley enjoyed school and soon started winning scholarships, which put him through The Kings School at Parramatta as a boarder. His Leaving Certificate included Honours in English and History. While there he captained the debating team and regularly won the boxing title for his weight. He obtained Articles of Clerkship in a Sydney legal firm, where he received nil per week in return for not having to pay the usual premium for learning the mysteries of the law. Dudley attended Sydney University Law School lectures in Phillip Street early and late in the day, worked in the office the rest of the day and studied for his exams at night. In his spare time he made a living with hack journalism, writing short stories, verse and humorous articles at 2 and 3 pence per line. He once wrote a radio play, produced it, acted one of the 3 parts and won second prize for the play in Radio 2GB's competition. Over-ripe bananas at 12 for threepence from the Sydney barrows were his cheap, filling and nutritious staple diet for several years. (Not his favourite fruit now). When Hitler made his run, Dudley joined the R.A.A.F. After doing convoy work he ended up as a Catalina flying boat pilot in 20 Squadron, mine dropping in the Celebes, Halmaheras, Philippines, North Borneo and the China Coast and also some air sea-rescue in amphibious Cats. Starting as a Sgt-Pilot he ended as a Flying Officer, surviving three crashes and various Jap bullet holes in the Cat. Dudley completed his LL.B. degree on his return in 1946 and then became the first solicitor to open in Cronulla. He soon took in 3 partners and opened 3 more offices in Caringbah, Miranda and Sutherland. In his spare time he established a succession of grazing properties around Moss vale, where he had a Hereford Stud. When Cronulla became too crowded he sold out to his partners and headed north to Murwillumbah, where for several years he owned grazing properties, again with a Hereford Stud, as well as starting a legal practice. Dudley has four children: Gilbert (Hospital C.E.O.), Victor (Tweed Heads Radiographer), Kent (Ag Teacher and Devon Cattle Stud at Gympie) and Roslyn (Teacher and wife of a Sydney Pathologist). In 1977 Dudley married Lorraine Bray and he acquired two step-sons. John (Computer Editor) and Russell (Builder). Dudley was a Charter Member of Cronulla Rotary Club in about 1948 and held all offices (including President) over his period of 26 years in legal practice there. He hopes to continue his tennis into the 21st century and to write at least one book when he retires from the law. (Note: Dudley was still practicing law at the time of his death.)

Health
Posted 11 Mar 2010 by Hugh Elliot
Dudley died either of a heart attack or burst aneurism while playing tennis. Witnesses said they he was enjoying a game of tennis; gave a laugh, then threw the ball up to serve and collapsed and died. At the time of his death he was taking tablets for high blood pressure and had a hiatus hernia and a duodenal ulcer. Because he died so suddenly it is suspected that the cause of his death was most likely cardiac in origin. Victor said he also had high cholesterol. No post-mortem was performed.
