Dumisani Masilela (1988 – 2017)
Brief overview:
Dumisani, a South African Actor, Musician and Soccer Player, was shot in the stomach during a hijacking in Tembisa, on 2nd August 2017. He was sitting inside his Golf 7 with friend Bongani Nkosi at the time. After he was shot he managed to drive away, and Bongani took the drivers seat and drove to Tembisa hospital. He underwent immediate surgery, but died as a result of severe injuries the following day.
According to police investigations, the murder suspects had hijacked another vehicle on that day and had attempted to hijack Masilela when he was shot.
“Dumisani’s vehicle was idling when a black Jeep arrived with three to four males inside. One of the males walked up to Masilela’s vehicle and just shot him,” said Tembisa South SAPS communication officer, Capt Neldah Sekgobela.
“It is with shock and sadness that South Africans learned of the tragic passing of Dumi Masilela. Crime has robbed us of such a promising star from the City of Ekurhuleni,” executive mayor of Ekhurluleni, Clr Mzawandile Masina said in a statement on Friday morning before visiting the family.
Minister of Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa took to Twitter on Thursday morning to express his deepest condolences to Masilela’s family and friends. “It is with absolute shock and dismay that we recieved the news of Rhythm City star Dumi Masilela’s sudden and tragic passing,” said Mthethwa.

- In August, five men were found guilty of murder and were arrested. These five men were: Bongani John Masombuka, Sfundo Harrison Nkosi, Khumbuzo Solomon Mukhaba, Brian Makhubedu, and Mashudu Malema, while the fifth suspect died in a robbery. They were produced to the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, where Makhuba was found to have pulled the trigger on Masileia. On 19th August 2017, Gauteng police arrested the sixth and final suspect of the murder. The suspect person appeared in the Benoni Magistrate Court and then joined with other suspects set for trial in the Pretoria High Court from October 8th to 19th. Finally they were sentenced to life imprisonment by the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria after a lengthy trial in 2019.
