About Duncan McLaurin

He was born in the Appin area of west Argyllshire. In 1745, at the age of 22, he fought in the Battle of Culloden and was wounded.

Married twice, both his wives were named Catherine. He and his first wife Catherine were married about 1741 in Scotland, and were the parents of several children.

His second wife was Catherine McLaurin, daughter of Hugh McLaurin. He and Hugh were second cousins, both descended from John McLaurin (b. abt 1645, Scotland) and wife ____ Cameron. Duncan and Catherine McLaurin were married about 1770 in Scotland.

In 1788, he, second wife Catherine and eleven (11) of his children emigrated from Scotland to North Carolina. He settled in that part of Richmond County, NC, that would later form Scotland County, NC.

One or more of his children settled in neighboring Marlboro County, South Carolina, where Duncan later died at age 84 - two weeks shy of his 85th birthday.
