Missing in Action aboard the USS Arizona (BB-39)
The USS Leopold (DE-319) was an Edsall-class destroyer escort built for the United States Navy during World War II. Named for Ensign Robert Lawrence Leopold (who served aboard the battleship Arizona and was killed during the Attack on Pearl Harbor), she was the only U.S. Naval vessel to bear the name. Launched on 12 June 1943; sponsored by Ms. Helen S. Leopold, sister of Ensign Leopold.
On 9 March, 1944 she was sunk by the German submarine U-255.

Graduated University of Louisville earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1938 and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) in 1940.
During his years at the University of Louisville he was the President of the Student Council and belonged to the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity.
The University of Louisville named a building in Mr. Leopold's memory. It was first used as a military barracks and later as a women's dormitory. It was razed in 1979. He had been president of the Student Council as an undergraduate and was a member of the law school honor council.
He also became a member of the Kentucky State Bar Association and the American Bar Association (Jr. Conference).
