About Earl de l'Eperon Jacob Li de Chamois

We know the Shumway family was Protestant (Huguenot). Living in the "no mans land" of St. Maixent l'Ecole, between the fighting of the French monarchy (Catholic) and the British-supported Protestants in the early 17th century, Jacob probably fought for the Huguenots. At some point, he was awarded the title/rank of Earl de l'Eperon (Earl of the Spur) probably as a commander of horse cavalry.

BTW, this period was depicted around 200 years later in Alexandre Dumas' "The Three Musketeers". Part of the story involved the Battle of Rochelle, when the French monarchist forces laid siege to the Protestant-held port city of La Rochelle, which is less than 100km WSW of St. Maixent l'Ecole.
