About Ebenezer Varney, Sr.
Quaker and blacksmith. He built a home at the foot of what is now know as Garrison Hill in Dover, NH. House was built in 1669 and surroundling hill became known as Varney's Hill during the 1700s. In 1829, John Ham purchased the property and house became known as Varney-Ham House. House was destroyed in 1970s to make room for appartment complexes. Alt. birth year, 1664. His house was fortified and called Varney garrison house. Was a safe refuge for families of the area during Native attacks. Ebenezer Varney and Mary Otis were married about 1692 in Dover, NH.

Biography
Ebenezer Varney, the son of Humphrey Varney and Sarah (Starbuck) (Austin) Varney was born about 1672 in Dover, Strafford, New Hampshire. Like his brother John, there apparently is no known birthrecord, but his birth date can be estimated by his stated age of 55 in 1727.

Ebenezer died in Dover, Strafford, New Hampshire sometime between 22 October 1753, when he signed his will, and 28 November 1753, when his will was entered into probate.

Ebenezer's will named his sons Stephen, John, Ebenezer, Nathaniel, Thomas, Samuel, and Paul; his daughters Sarah Gaskin, Abigail Fry, Martha Twombly, Anna Hanson; children of his daughters Mary Horn and JudithHanson (both deceased); and his sons-in-law Samuel Gaskin, William Fry, John Twombly, Solomon Hanson, and Tobias Hanson (husband of deceased daughter Judith).

Ebenezer Varney ". . . like his father became a man of influence and substance. . . during the Indian troubles which accompanied the wars between the English and French powers, his house was strongly fortifiedand called Varney garrison house, and history states that it frequetly afforded safe refuge for the families of the locality against the incursions of marauding Indians. . ."
Mary Otis was taken in the 1689 Indian attack in Dover, NH. How she returned to marry Ebenezer Varney is still a mystery.
