Biography:
Born c. 1888, Edith Standing Bear is in Indian Census reports from 1896-1904, and with only one exception, as the granddaughter of George Chief Standing Bear and his wife Lena Hawk (aka One Horse), so her parents are unknown but she would have been the daughter of one of Georges known 14 children.

It is interesting to note that Tiyospaye - An Oglala Genealogy Resource, does NOT show Edith as a daughter of Chief George Stand Bear and Lena One Horse, so the granddaughter supposition seems to hold.
According to Carla Joinson in her book Vanished in Hiawatha, Edith's date of admission to the Canton Asylum is unknown, although extracting from information in the Indian censuses, she disappears after Jun 30, 1904. When admitted she was diagnosed with Sporadic cretinism (Sporadic cretinism is a type of congenital hypothyroidism, or iodine deficiency disorder, that occurs when the fetal thyroid gland doesn't develop properly. This results in decreased thyroid hormone synthesis, which can cause severely stunted physical and mental growth.
In his letter dated February 17, 1934, to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, Dr. L.L. Culp advises that Edith was admitted from Allen, South Dakota, died at the Canton Asylum on May 13, 1905, at the age of 17, and is buried in the Canton Hiawatha Cemetery, tier 5 plot 7.
Her profile is part of the The Canton Asylum One Place Study.

Same as the girl described here? - a daughter or granddaughter of Lena ‘Hawk’ Standing Bear. Edith is shown as both daughter and granddaughter to Lena Standing Bear. Both are possible; however, if she is a granddaughter, who is her Standing Bear parent?
