About Edith Louise Chubbuck Swapp
Obituary for Edith Fitch Swapp '39
Modesto, California ~ January 19, 2010
Born into a family of Woosterians, Edith Fitch spent her early years in Shanghai, China, the daughter of Dr. George Ashmore Fitch ’06, secretary of the YMCA there. Following siblings Marion ’33 George Jr. ’34, and Albert x’40, Edith finished high school in Virginia before attending Wooster. She was a French major and member of the tennis and basketball teams, as well as Phi Sigma Iota and the Pyramids, and corresponded with many classmates after graduation. If her Wooster friends found Edith difficult to keep in touch with, however, it was because she spent much of her adult life outside the United States, including residences in Taiwan, Japan, Australia, and Mallorca, Spain, where Edith worked as a history teacher at a British school. It was there that she married Alex Swapp and lived with him until his death. Upon returning to the U.S., Edith enjoyed gardening, playing bridge, and traveling. Edith’s four children, one grandchild, and two half brothers survive her.
