About Edith Juliane Weiner

Edith was very sweet. Would make you feel so loved and would give you anything she had.

Mother died when she was 5. Had a woman who was a housekeeper who took care of her who was basically a second mother. That woman was a Nazi sympathizer and turned them in.

When they got to the US, they lived with the Weiss' and had no money. Edith was a house cleaner. Max was a Fuller brush salesman who went house to house. Max had studied English in school in Vienna. Edith had taken baking classes in Vienna and was a fabulous baker. She would make, Guggelaph, HW's favorite cake. After HW and DW were married, Edith would send a cake to HW. They used to only send one, but by the time HW got home from work, it would be gone. After that, they started sending 2 cakes.

Max Weiner was very handy - good build or fix anything. In HW and DW's first house in VA, had old windows that were warped and couldn't be closed well. They were told they had to replace all the windows but couldn't afford to do that. Max came along and put a quarter in the frame of the window and miraculously got them all to work.

In Jackson Heights (8914 37th ave), they lived in a one-bedroom apartment on the 5th floor on 89th street and jackson heights. Max and Edith slept on a pull out couch while Harvey and his grandfather lived in the one-bedroom apartment. Later moved to a two-bedroom on 75th Street when HW was in junior high school. HW's best friend, Peter Turkel, lived across the street. Max built a table and chairs built into the hallway.

Edith ultimately became a bookkeeper and worked there until she moved to FL. Got the job from a close friend, Carol. One of their friends worked at Carbona, a chemical cleaning fluid company. Got Edith a job where she learned how to do bookkeeping.

Max used his engineering background working as a tool and dye maker. Worked on a machine to make tools. Dejur, in Long Island City- company where Max worked. 15 minutes from home in Jackson Heights. Still have a projector from the company where Max worked as the foreman of the tool and dye business. That company shut down and he got another job and won awards for the machines he designed and built.

Max loved opera music.

Went through Ellis Island when came to the US. Were told that "Veiner" was not a good name in the US so changed in to "Weiner" pronunciation.

In Europe, they were middle class but in the US, had to start all over again.

In passport, there is an additional middle name, Sara (Edith Juliane Sara Weiner), because the Nazis gave all Jewish women the name of Sara.
