Research Notes

It appears that at least two people named Edmund Sherman/Shearman had children in Dartmouth/New Bedford, Massachusetts, from 1675 to 1700.

Published Family Histories

A long article published in 1870 lists Shermans in southeast Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island in the late 1600s.[1] In it, Edmond is listed as son of Phillip, born in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, in 1641, who then moved to Dartmouth, Massachusetts. He had a daughter Lydia, born 1682. No wife name is included.[1] For Edmond's profile, I'm following this reference, though no sources were included.

Notes on Children

Nathaniel was born in May 1676 and Samuel was born in July 1676. Since no mother's names were recorded, it is unlikely that we can sort them out. Duplicate birth records are recorded in Dartmouth and New Bedford, complicating our analysis. An eight year gap between Nathan 1686 and Elnathan in 1694 also points to separate families, possibly. You will note the differences in birth dates between familysearch.org citations and the published but unsourced genealogy below.

The Edmund Shermans/Shearmans had at least the following children:

Nathaniel 1676[2]
Samuel 1676[8]
David 1680[3]
Lydia 1682[4]
Nathan 1686[9]
Elnathan 1694[5]
Joseph 1698[6]
