About Edmund Bryan Crane

Edmund Bryan Crane was author and poet Stephen Crane's older brother, and the one with whom he had the closest relationship.

Edmund, then a teacher in Sussex County, NJ, became Stephen's legal guardian following the death of their parents. Stephen Crane wrote most of his novels The Third Violet and The Red Badge of Courage at Edmund's summer home in Hartwood, New York.

Edmund Bryan Crane was a graduate of Centenary College Institute (now Centenary College). He married Mary L. Fleming, whose maiden name is considered to be the source of the protagonist's name in The Red Badge of Courage.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Nov 14 2023, 7:34:37 UTC
