A John Freeman, "paterfamilias"—I don't say the John Freeman above, because the "bad merge" commented upon below by Joe Cochoit in 2017 seems not to have been rectified—was buried at Pulborough on 2 May 1629, not 26 January of that year; this was entered in the Research Notes section in 2020 by Jeff Freeman. But beyond that, what, please, is the evidence that John Freeman of Pulborough (bur. 2 May 1629) was the father of Edmond Freeman, who was buried in Pulborough 6 June 1623 and whose namesake son immigrated to New England in 1635? On the face of it (having died six years apart), John and the elder Edmond appear more likely to have been brothers.

Edmund Freeman, yeoman, of Pulborough, co. Sussex, England, was buried there 6 June 1623; married Alice Coles, who died at Reigate, co. Surrey, before 5 Mar 1751/2 in the home of her daughter Alice.
His will, dated 30 May 1623, provides for his wife; daughter Alice Beauchamp; son John Freeman; youngest daughter Elizabeth; grandchildren (unnamed); “my sister Harte”; servants; Geore Coles, “my wives brother”; two eldest sons, Edmund and William Freeman, executors and residuaty legatees; overseers, Nicholas Bell of Arondell and George Coles of Amberley. Signed by mark. Administration, with the testament annexed, was granted 18 June 1623 to the son Edmund.
1 Jan 1590/1 Edmund married Alice Coles, daughter of George Coles, in Pulborough, Essex. Born ca 1568 in Amberley, Sussex. Alice died Feb 1651/2. Buried 14 Feb 1651/2 in Rigate, Surrey.

The will of Alice Freeman of Rigate, co. Surrey, widow, dated 13 Nov. 1650, proved 5 Mar. 1651/2, gave £4 to son Edmond Freeman and his wife; £3 to son William Freeman; her house in Pulborough to sons Edmond and William; to son John Cuddington and Elizabeth Cuddington, goods for life and then to Alice and Elizabeth Cuddington her daughters; to grandchildren Edmond Beauchamp, Richard Beauchamp, Alice Dogett, Mary Woolsley and Elizabeth Beauchamp and to Sarah Beauchamp and Alice Beauchamp “her daughters” [sic], 40s. apiece; to son William Freeman’s children “that he had by his last wife the beds tehir mother fetched out of my house in Poulborough”; rest of goods to John Beauchampe of Ryegate, Surrey, Esq., and Alice his wife, they to be executors.

Will dated May 20, 1623, administered June 18 following, made sons Edmond and William executors. His widow, Allice, sister of George Coles, of Amberly, co Sussex, spent her later years at Reigate,, co Surrey, in the home of her daughter and son in law, Alice. and John Beauchamp. Her will dated November 13, 1650, proved Mar 5, 1641/2, included a bequest to Edmond Freeman and his wife. Children all born at Pulborough.

Edmund Freeman appears to have been a well-to-do yeoman of Pulborough. His will, dated 30 May, 1623. To be buried in Pulborough church; to my wife, £200 and benefit of copy-hold wherein I dwell and thirds of my lands for life, etc.; to my daughter Alice Beauchamp, £50; to my son John Freeman, three tenements, in Pulborough now in occupation of the widow Sommers, Wepham and named Fouks in fee, also £100; to my youngest daughter Elizabeth, £300; to my seven grandchildren, viz,; my sons and daughters children, £20 apiece; to my sister Harte, £5; to kindred, 20/ apiece; to the poor of the parish £5; to servants and others; to George Coles my wives brother, £5. Edmund Freeman and William Freeman, my two eldest Sons, to be my executors; rest of goods and lands to my executors; to Ligh church at Chichester, 6d. Nicholas Bell of Arundel and George Coles of Amberley to be overseers and to have £5. My wife to have benefit of the lease for her life of the "brookes."
