The Question of Identity
The immediate ancestry of Edmund Hay of Leys, here treated, has not been satisfactorily identified. It has been claimed that he is the descendant of William Hay, a younger son of David de La Haya, 2nd Lord of Errol, although the number of generations, and the names of the individuals intervening between the two men is not known. According to Sir James Balfour Paul, Edmund Hay of Leys is descended from William de Haya, second son of David de Haya, second of Erroll. He had two sons. The name of their mother is not known. The Scots Peerage V: pp. 217
