I have seen a suggestion that Edward Kemp was the son of Edmund Kemp and Denise Watson of Norfolk, England. Perhaps, but there was another Edward Kemp in Virginia in the late 17th century, so I am not jumping to any conclusions about Kemp’s origins.

Edward KEMP was the son of Edmund and Denise, b. London,1645. He had two brothers, Matthew, b. 1650, London, and Robert, b. 1652,London, but he also had a SISTER - Anne, b. 1660 in VA. She m. Phillip HUNLEY, Jr. in Gloucester Co., VA., son of Phillip, Sr. and Anne PETTUS.(Ther is a lot about the PETTUS family and plantation in VA near williamsburg, which has been excavated by archeologists, and I have a lot about it from the Internet and a book purchased).

The issue you raised about the subject Mary Digges prodded me into a little more on-line research. You may recall, my HUNDLEY research sources have Edmund Kemp as the father of my wife's ancestor, Ann Kemp, and her sister Mary. But they have no mother for the sisters. I looked into Mary Digges as their mother but I now doubt that she was, as discussed in my database notes for her in the page linked below:

Based on the partial agreement between two KEMP researchers, Betty Sullivan and Patricia Kemp, I have placed Denise Watson as the most most likely mother of Ann & Mary Kemp.Below are links to the KEMP GenForum postings of Sullivan and Kemp which I cite in my database:

I believe Sullivan has one too many generations with Edmund Kemp and that Kemp has a more reasonable line in her "Descendants of Richard KEMPE" which starts on page two of her above posting.Kemp has only two generations of Edmund Kemp. You may want to contact Patricia Kemp to see if she has come across any research with your Kemp Gatewood.Good hunting..........Kent
