Mary Mann and Ann Hunley were not daughters of Col. Thomas Pettus. Mary was the daughter of Edmund Kemp and Ann was her sister.


Mary Mann was buried at Abingdon Episcopal Church Cemetery, White Marsh, Gloucester County, Virginia, USA.[1] Her headstone inscribed as follows: "Here Lyeth Intered the Body of Mrs. Mary Mann, of the County of Gloucester, in the Colony of Virginia, Gentlewoman, who Departed this life the 18th day of March, 1703-4. Aged 56 years."[2]

Mary (Kempe) Berkeley Mann (1647-18 Mar 1704)was born in Kingston Parish, Gloucester Co. VA. Her parents were Edmund Kempe II (c. 1625 - c.1680) & wife Ann LNU (last name unknown) who settled in Lancaster County, VA.

Mary had 1 younger sister, Anne Kempe Hundley(c. 1660 - aft 1704): (m. Philip Hundley bef. 1684). Mary's 1704 will in Gloucester Co. named Anne & Philip Hundley.

Mary had 2 husbands:

  • m. 1664 #1 Edmund Berkeley (1647-1670) : and
  • m. 1671 #2 John Mann (1631-1694);

& had 3 children:

  • Edmund Berkeley (1666 - 1718),
  • Sarah Berkeley (1669 - ??) who married Joseph Ring; &
  • Mary Mann (1671 - 1717). Mary Mann b 1672 Gloucester Co d 27 Mar 1707 Gloucester Co m c 1689 Matthew Page of "Rosewell", Gloucester Co b 1659, Williamsburg d 9 Jan 1702/3, Gloucester Co; memb.   1. Mary Mann, b c. 1672, d 27 Mar 1707; m to 1) in 1689 to Hon. Matthew Page (d 1703), 2) to John Page (cousin).[2] The will of John Mann, in 1695, mentions daughter Mary Page, wife of Matthew Page, "son-n-law" Edmund Berkeley (equivalent to step-son).[3]

The will of Mary Mann, dated 1704, mentions daughter Sarah Ring, grandchildren Joseph, Edmund, Elizabeth, Sarah, and Mary Ring, brother-n-law Philip Hunley. Grandchildren Mann, Alice, and Martha Page, kinswoman Mary Kilson, and son Edmund Berkeley. [4]

Why Sarah is not mentioned in her step-fathers will is not known. It is possible that Mary Page and Matthew Page parents of the grandchildren mentioned in Mary Mann's will, were both deceased by 1704.

Death and Legacy

Mary died March 14, 1704 and is buried at Timberneck, on the York River, Virginia.[4]

  • March 1704 - WILL OF MRS. MARY MANN of Gloucester County, Va.
  • In the name of God, Amen. I, Mary Mann, of the Parish of Abington, in the county of Gloster, being sencible of the frailty of humane nature and the many axedents we are subject to that may deprive of sence and memmory in a moment, doe make this my last will and Testament in manner and form following:
  • Imprimis, I doe bequeathe my soule into the hands of that Greate God that gave it, nothing doubting, but by the meritorious death of the Lord Jesus Christ, my ever blessed Saviour, I shall be raised at the last day, when I shall behold my redeemer coming in the clouds, and that I shall from thenceforth have all sorrow wip't from mine eyes, and shall enter into everlasting joy and happiness, there to remaine in ye ages of all etern-ity. My body I commend to the earth from whence it came, to be buryed according to the Church of England and descretion of my executor hereafter to be named.
  • Ittem; After my Debts and Funrall charges paid, the remaining part of my Estate that god hath blessed me with, I give in manner and form following: Ittem, I give unto my loving daughter Sarah Ring two negro men, by name Peter and Jo, both which to remaine in the hands of my executor, with the porffits of htem, till she shall think fitt to call them out, or any part theireof, which ad proffits and negroes to be disposed of by my executor for her use as she shall direct and no otherwaise. I also give unto my siad daughter a gold Ring of twenty shillings price.
  • Ittem: I give my grandchildren, Joseph, Edmund, Elizabeth, Sarah Mary Rign, two hundred pounds sterling, to be Layd out in negroes in the yeare seventeene hundred and five or the firt oppertunity afterwards if my Son-in-Law, Mr. Joseph Ring, will allow land to worke ye negroes, which, with the said negroes, to be Equally divided between the above said children as they shall come to age or marry, or the survivours of them.
  • Ittem. I lend untop my Bro-in-Law, Phillip Hunly, one negro man named Santo during his life, but if it please God the above sd Hunly dy before his wife, I doe give the above sd negro to my sister, Ann Hunly, and her heires. I doe also Give my said sister one gold ring of fifteen shillings price.
  • Ittem. I doe give unto my three grandchildren, Mann, Alice and Martha Page, each of them a peace of plate of teen pounds price, the peace to be paid in the yeare seventeen hundred and foure, or thirty pounds to be laid out in plate by theire fa ther of Gardian as my executor shall think fit.
  • Ittem. I give unto my two Daughters, Sarah Ring and Mary Page, all my wearing apparell, to be equally divided between them.
  • Ittem. I doe give unto Ellinor Readon one heffer of three years ould.
  • Ittem. I doe give unto Ann Booker one heffer, to be paid when she shall be marryed or of age.
  • Ittem: I doe give unto my son-in-law, Coll. Matthew Page, and Mary, his wife, each of them a god Ring of twenty shillings price.
  • Ittem: I doe give unto my son-in-law, Mr. Joseph Ring, a gold ring of twenty shillings price.
  • Ittem: I doe give unto my God Daughter, Ann Booker, a gold ring of fifteen shillings price.
  • Ittem: The remaining part of my Istate both heare and elcewhere, of what nature and quality soever, with every part and parcel thereof, I doe give and Bequeath to my Loveing Son, Edmund Berkeley, and his heires forever.
  • I doe also nominate, Constitute and appoint my well beloved Son, Edmund Berkeley, my whole and sole Executor of this my Last Will and Teatament, utterly making void and revokeing all former wills by me made,
