After careful study of both wills, it is thought that the deceased son Edmund was in fact Edward New who married Sarah Bland and died young, leaving one son, John. The name Edmund and Edward were often abbreviated, and in transcribing old records it would have been easy to mistake one for the other.
Will of Edmund New, 4 Jul 1726, rec. 5 Sep 1726, Edmund New of St. James Parish

Edward NEW,Edward NEW, son of Edmund and Mary NEW, was probably born in Charles City Co VA. He was married to Sarah Bland, daughter of Edward and Margaret Bland of “Kymages”. Sarah’s father, Edward Bland died ca. 1690, and Kymages , a tract of 2,000 acres which was part of Berkeley Plantation, in Charles City Co. VA., was left to Sarah, her brother John, and her mother, Margaret, who remarried Thomas Tanner. Sarah’s brother John died unmarried and without issue, therefore, Sarah inherited her brothers share of the land.
In the Laws of Virginia we found that Sarah “entered into the said two thousand acres of land and appurtenances, and became seised in possession of two third parts of the reversion of the other third part of the same, expectant immediately upon the determination of the natural life of the said Margaret Tanner (her mother), and intermarried with Edward NEW, late of the county of Charles City deceased, whom she survived, by whom she had issue John a son”. The land was to have been held by the heirs of Edward Bland forever. We know from this account that Edward NEW died young, and with only one child, John, who would have been lawful heir.
However, Sarah Bland NEW remarried Alexander Horton, and together, they sold her share of Kymages to Benjamin Harrison 6 February 1722, for 1530 acres of land on Hunting Quarter Swamp in Surry Co, VA, and fifty pounds sterling money of Great Britain. Sarah’s mother, Margaret Tanner, sold her share of Kymages to Benjamin Harrison 6 Aug 1723 for thirty pounds lawful money of Great Britain and other considerations. There are no records to show where Edward NEW was buried, but is is believed that he was buried near Kymages, perhaps at Westover Church.
