Edmund Van Brunt, M.D. April 28, 1926 - May 19, 2017

Edmund Ewing "Ted" Van Brunt passed away peacefully at home Friday, May 19 at the age of 91. Ted was born in Berkeley to Kathryn Ann Shattuck and Adrian Wilbur Van Brunt and attended Thousands Oaks Elementary, Garfield Junior HIgh and Berkeley High Schools. Following his service with the US Army in Europe during WW II, Ted received his BA in Biophysics from UC Berkeley and his MD from the UC School of Medicine San Francisco. He was appointed staff physician in medicine and cardiology at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in San Francisco, where he served also on numerous medical center and Northern California committees.

In 1979 he was appointed Director of the Division of Research for the KP Medical Care Program in the Northern California Region. He was Adjunct Professor at the UCSF School of Medicine from 1975 to 1991 and a member of the UCSF Emeritus Faculty Association, and in 1978 was awarded the degree of Doctor of Sciences from the University Paul Sabatier-Toulouse, France, following a decade of developmental work in medical informatics. From 1985 to 2011 he served as Chairman of the Institutional Review Board for the protection of human research subjects for the Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program, Northern California Region. He was member and former President of the Board of Trustees of the San Francisco-based French American Foundation for Medical Research and Education, and former member of the Board of Directors of Alameda County Meals on Wheels.

Ted was an avid pianist, photographer, pilot, skier, swimmer, and mentor to many. He was loved and respected by friends, family, colleagues and patients alike. Predeceased by his brother Adrian Wilbur Van Brunt in Texas in 1998, and his wife of 68 years, Claire Monod Van Brunt, in 2015, Ted is survived by his children Karin, Deryk and Jahn, and grandchildren Alexander, Sumner, Coulson and Blaise. His generous and compassionate spirit will be greatly missed.
