Edmund Wood Jr. was a puritan which was a movement of Englsh reformers of the 16th. and 17th. centuries who were frustrated by the slow progress of the reformation of the Angilican Church after 227 when christen leaders had been burned at the steak during the reign of (Queen Bloody Mary) from 1553-1558.

It was during the reign of Queen Elizabeth (1558-1603) that puritans believed that the bible was gods true law. Queen Elizabeth was the head of the National Church and she opposed and blocked all the reform.
During this time Edward struggled to make his home for his family just as puritan people were running out of options and room to grow.
When a letter forced him to leave Halifax, Yorkshire, England giving up his church chapel and flee England to the wilderness of the New World in America. To escape persecution from church leadership and the king. The Wood family became part of the puritan emigration to the American Colonies.

GEDCOM Note

Came from Halifax, Yorkshire, to Massachusetts Bay in 1635, probably on the James of Bristol. His first residence is unknown, but he was at Springfield by 1636, a yeoman at Wethersfield in 1637, Stamford in 1641, Hempstead in 1644, & finally Huntington.
He was born by about 1586 (based on date of marriage), son of Edmund Wood of Shelf in Halifax, Yorkshire.
He married at Halifax, Yorkshire, 21 May 1611, Martha Lum, daughter of William Lum. They had 5 known children.
He died after 1650 & by 1663, & probably closer to the latter date.
Edmund Wood was brother of Susan (Wood) (Butterfield) Mitchell, wife of MATTHEW MITCHELL 1635, Charlestown, Since Wood & Mitchell were brothers-in-law & were seen together at Springfield, Wethersfield, & Stamford, it is likely that Wood was a passenger on the James in 1635 & also briefly resided at Charlestown & Concord, though there is no record of him there.
