About Edward Carter
Edward Carter
was the fourth largest Dobbs County landowner with 23,292 acres in 1780 [L.P.46.1 in Journal of N.C. Genealogy XII:1664]. He was head of a Dobbs County household of 8 "other free," one white woman, and 20 slaves in 1790 [NC:137]. (Note 10) A Free People of Color family, this Carter has Ocaneechi maternal lines and make up the foundation of the Lumbee Nation of Carter descendancy along with the The Bunch (married Southern Tuscororan), Chavis (whose descendants today has many a Lumbee Nation member) and Gibson families (who tie back to the Pee Dee and Louisa Co with court case on their native Jane progenitor denoting her native line, Jane The Elder), owned slaves and acquired over a thousand acres of land on both sides of the Roanoke River, and the Chavis and Gowen families acquired over a thousand acres in Granville County.
Edward Carter (1674-1736), came to North Carolina from Isle of Wright County, Virginia, with his wife Margaret. Edward Carter was the son of Thomas Carter (1650-1710) and Magdalen Moore, daughter of Lieutenant George Moore.
