About Moore "Moses" Carter, I

Moore “Moses”Carter was born about 1680 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, a younger son of Thomas Carter Jr. (abt.1648-1710) and his wife, Magdalene (Moore) Carter (abt.1656-aft.1737) (daughter of George Moore).

Moore Carter moved to North Carolina where he joined the revolt against King George II in protest against high taxes. “Moore Carter’s name was put on a list of tax delinquents,” but some years later, the tax was reduced, and he avoided imprisonment by paying it.

Moore Carter married Jane Kindred. No original source record can be found to give us the date or place of the marriage, for which a wide range of estimates from unsourced family trees and stories exist.

He and Jane had at least eight children who were identified in the division of his estate on 30 Apr 1741. Additional POSSIBLE Children are listed: Bullets include children (grandchildren of Moore Carter and Jane Kindred found, there may be more.

George Carter, Moore Carter and Henry White witnessed a deed transfer on 22 Feb 1710 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, by their grandparents, George Moore and his wife Jane.

He was a wealthy man who owned several hundred acres.

He died before Nov 1740 in Bertie County, North Carolina, at which time his widow, Jane Carter, presented an inventory of her late husband's estate.

Estate Estate of Moore Carter

1740/Nov Bertie County, North Carolina - inventory presented by the widow Jane Carter.

1741/Apr/30 Bertie County, North Carolina - Division of Negroes (sic) and personal property as follows ...

  • to the widow, Negroes Sam and Moll
  • to Jacob Carter, personal property only
  • to Kindred Carter, Negro Scipio
  • to Isaac Carter, Negro Jude
  • to James Jones, Negro Isabell
  • to Moore Carter, personal property only
  • to Bryan O'Quinn, father of Patience O'Quinn,
  • to Katherine Carter, personal property only
  • to Susanna Carter, personal property only.

Record notes that Kindred Carter and James Jones were to pay Jane Carter (mother of Susanna Carter) the over surplus of what they had received.

In 1710 Thomas Carter, Jr. left a last Will which did not name all of his children, but one of his sons is believed to be Moore Carter (c1680-1741) who married Jane and moved to Bertie County, North Carolina. Moore left a last Will naming a son Isaac who married Ruth and died after 1790. Isaac and Ruth were the parents of Kindred and James, among others. Kindred and James both came to Georgia.

Slaves

  • Named in his will, to the widow: Sam Moll
  • Named in his will to Kindred Carter Scipio
  • Named in his will to Isaac Carter Jude
  • Named in his will to James Jones Isabell

Research Notes In the early 1700s, it was fashionable to name second born sons for their maternal grandfather. See for example, Naming Patters. Because Kindred Carter seems to have fit that pattern, it's the best - but admittedly weak-confirmation that Jane's maiden name was Jane Kindred.

Jane Kindred was (possibly) the daughter of John Kindred, Jr. (c1660-1703) and his wife Katherine Hunnicutt. Katherine had first married by 1704 to William Peacock, who died in 1722. The author of the referenced information added the annotation: This is my working hypothesis - the way I see it as of this moment! (Refer to: Moor Carter & Jane Kindred at Sally's Family Place.)

However, Jane Kindred was also named as a daughter of Samuel Kindred in his Will. A loose Carter/Kindred/Middleton association is in evidence also because Samuel Kindred's estate was appraised by Martin Middleton, whose daughter, Sarah, married Jacob Carter (son of Moore Carter and Jane Kindred).

Daughter Susannah (Carter) Skinner is discussed at the site Descendants of Moore and Carter and also at Sally's Family Place.
