In 1837, the first trading posts were established among the Osages, by Edward Chouteau, Gerald Pappin and John Mathews, the latter locating near White Hair's village, now Oswego, Labette County. A half-breed settlement was established between Canville and Flat Rock Creek.||Among the latter who had business relations with the tribe under government license were Michel Giraud, whose trading-post was near the site of the present Erie, Edouard Chouteau, son of Auguste Pierre Chouteau and grandson of Auguste Chouteau, Laclede's associate in the founding of St. Louis, who resided at the mouth of Flat Rock Creek about two miles from the mission (his wife, Rosalie Capitaine, was a well-educated Osage mixed-blood),|_____________________________________________________||I, Edward L. Chouteau, residing at present in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, do hereby make this my last will and testament:|I give and bequeath to each of my three half-breed children, Louis L. Chouteau, Louise Chouteau and Sophia Chouteau, which I had by Rosallie Capitaine, an Indian woman of the Osage nation of Indians, one hundred and thirty-three dollars per annum during their natural lives.||And when either of my said children shall die, the amount which would have been paid to such deceased child shall be paid to my brother Auguste L. Chouteau, his heirs and asignes.||A portion of an article in the St Louis Post-Dispatch January 14, 1990
