About Edward Fabian Courtney, Jr

Birth: Jan. 29, 1849 Dubuque Dubuque County Iowa, USA Death: Aug. 6, 1925 Belmond Wright County Iowa, USA

Edward Fabian Courtney was born in Dubuque, Iowa, January 29th, 1849, and died at his home in Belmond, Iowa, August 6th, 1925, age 76 years, 6 months and 7 days. In his early life his parents moved to a farm near Julien, Dubuque county, where he grew to manhood, and in 1879 was united in marriage to Elizabeth Nevins who preceded him to the Great Beyond only nine months. In 1882 he emigrated to the farm in Franklin county, two miles east of Meservey, where by hard labor and frugality he built up his farm and made many friends who will regret his departure. Owing to failing health he moved to Belmond in April, 1914, where he resided until his death. Mr. Courtney's life was one of unselfishness and sacrifice. He was a good neighbor, kind and loving husband and father and a true friend to all with whom he came in contact. In his dealing with his fellowmen he was strictly honest and always applied the Golden Rule. On January 30, 1925 he suffered a stroke and altho he partially recovered, he had not regained his usual strength and on August 1 he was again stricken. This stroke proved fatal and on Thursday, August 6, he passed peacefully into the arms of his Creator, surrounded by his immediate family and fortified by the Sacraments of the Church of which he had been a faithful, devout member. Deceased is survived by three sons, Walter E., of Algona; James P. of Dows; and Joseph F. of Thornton, and one daughter, Carrie L. of Belmond, one daughter Mary Marcella, and one son, Robert, together with his beloved wife having preceeded him in death. He also leaves to mourn his one sister, Mrs. T. F. Nevins of Dubuque, Iowa, and four brothers, Daniel and Robert J. of Dubuque, John H. of St. Louis, Mo, and Wm T. of Waterloo, Iowa and thirteen grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at St. Francis Catholic Church where Solemn Requeim High Mass was celebrated by his pastor, Rev. Father Eardley, with Father Torpey of Clarion and Father McMahan of Hampton as assistants. Interment was made in St. Francis cemetery. Those from a distance in attendance at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. D. L. Courtney, Mr. Robert J. Courtney and Mrs. T. F. Nevins, all of Dubuque; Mr and Mrs. I. W. Albert and son, Thomas, also Mrs. N. J. Nemmers of Bancroft, Iowa; Mr. M. S. Braga and Mr. T. W. Braga and family of Iowa Falls, Iowa; Mrs. Mary Dorsey of Swaledale, and numerous friends and neighbors from Meservey and Thornton. The pallbearers wer C. C. McGuire, J. F. Barry, M. D. Sullivan, M.
