He wa shome for a few days when during a severe winter of 1891/1892 came and delivered the baby boy. He was 23 years old and was given the honor of naming his nephew. He named him Ashton Harecourt for his best friend and fellow student at the medical school.

He was a retired miner and retained an interest in community affairs.
