GEDCOM Note

Colonial and Revolutionary Families of Pennsylvania, Volumes I-III
Powell Evans James Daniel, grandson of Captain William Daniel and great-grandfather of Jane Beverly (Daniel) Evans, was born about the year 1700. He was a justice in Goochland county, Virginia, 1737 to 1743, and sheriff of that county 1743-4. He later removed to Albemarle county, Virginia, where he filled the office of local magistrate 1754-5, and was sheriff in 1756. His will was probated in the latter county February 12, 1761. He married in 1736, Elizabeth Woodson, great-granddaughter of Dr. John Woodson, of Dorsetshire, England, "Chireogeon" and wife Sarah, mentioned in the "Original Lists of Persons of Quality" (Hotten, p. 216) as living in Henrico County in 1619. Their eldest son, Chesley Daniel, married Judith Christian, of Albermarle county, Virginia, a daughter of the distinguished family of Virginia Cavaliers who fled England during the Commonwealth and appeared in Middlesex county, Virginia, as early as 1656. These Christians were the lineal descendants of the Christian family, (W. & M. Quar. V, 261, VIII, 70.) residuary Deemsters of the Isle of Mann. Chesley Daniel crossed the line into the old county of Granville, in North Carolina, and in 1740 built his country seat "Tranquility", named similarly with the seat of Colonel Peter. Vivian Daniel, of Middlesex county, Virginia, for an ancestoral seat in England. This property is still in the Daniel family. Chesley Daniel's daughter Martha, married her second cousin George Daniel, of Granville county, North Carolina, and Jane Beverly Daniel was the first daughter of the latter marriage. She was a woman of estimable character and marked business ability. On the death of her husband Thomas Evans in 1845, she took charge of his heavily involved estate and managed it with eminent success. Her sons were educated in the best American Colleges and her unlimited hospitality was a by-word in all the Pedee region, while her piety was of the purest kind. She had a family of thirteen children. Her eldest son, Hon. Chesley D. Evans, was a graduate of the South Carolina College and a member of the Secession Convention of 1860 in South Carolina, signing the Ordinance of Secession; Thomas was United States District Attorney for South Carolina in 1844; Nathan George was graduate of United States Military Academy and a Brigadier-General in Confederate States America, commanding Confederate forces at Battle of Ball's Bluff, campaign of 1861-62; William E. was a graduate United States Naval Academy and served under Admiral Porter, later attained rank of Commander Confederate States Navy, served under Raphael Semmes, Confederate States ship "Alabama," later commanded Confederate States ship "Georgia". Captain A. L. Evans served throughout the war between the states, as Adjutant of Brigade and was later clerk of the State Senate of South Carolina.

Woodsons married into the Middlesex Daniels from South Carolina?????

Original Daniels found in Wilkes County land records for the area that became Elbert County in 1790, then became Madison County in 1811 was William Daniel, his wife Nancy and their children. William Daniel, Sr., whose relationship as a son of Captain James Daniel and Elizabeth Woodson was strongly inferred by a preponderance of extant evidence, was born before 1747 in Virginia and died after the 1800 census was taken 3 Nov 1800 in Old pendleton District, South Carolina.

May have had another son: John Minor Daniel. Elizabeth Morton 1, 2 (Agnes Woodson , Richard , Robert , John ) was born 3 on 14 May 1754 in Charlotte Co., VA. She died 4 in 1828 in Charlotte Co., VA.

Elizabeth married 2 John Minor Daniel 1 son of Capt. James Daniel and Elizabeth Woodson about 1772. John was born 3 in 1751. He died 4 in 1790.

They had the following children:

+ 329 F i Pauline Daniel. + 330 F ii Nancy Daniel died in 1850.

Died as a small child.

CAMPBELL CHRONICLES and FAMILY SKETCHES Embracing the History of CAMPBELL COUNTY, VIRGINIA 1782-1926 By R. H. EARLY With Illustrations J. P. BELL COMPANY LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA 1927 Daniel Many of the Daniel name appear in the parish register of Christ Church, Middlesex county, which seems to indicate that the family were Eastern Shore emigrants. A William Daniel, of different generations, is found there from 1678 to 1751, a James Daniel from 1704 till 1739. In the U. S. Census of 1785 James Daniel is listed as head of a family in St. Paul's parish, Hanover county; one in Orange, another in Prince Edward; William as head of a family in Shenandoah, one in Orange and a third in Cumberland. Samuel Daniel in 1758 was a soldier in a regiment for defense. In 1742 James Daniel patented 2O32 acres of land on the ridge between the head branches of Buffalo and Elk creeks: in 175O he patented 469 acres on south side of Staunton river. James Daniel was a Goochland justice in 1742 and sheriff from 1743 to 1744. When Albemarle was divided from Goochland he became a justice there from 1744 to 1745, and then sheriff of Albemarle, Dr. William Cabell becoming his security in both counties. In Albemarle two of Cabell's sons, William and Joseph, were deputy sheriffs under Daniel, and had charge of the business on the north side of the river. Daniel is given the title of captain. He married Elizabeth Woodson; Children: —Chesley, m. Judith Christian; —Abraham; —Josiah; —James, Jr., m. Hannah _____; —Mary; -Susannah. —John Minor in 1772 married Elizabeth Morton; his daughter, Nancy, m. Rev. Wm. Nelson Scott. In 1799 Peter Daniel was granted 6OO acres on both sides of Bear creek by patent. Peter and Mary Daniel sold Patrick Ratekin 20O acres of land, 1OO acres being part of his 600 acre grant and the other 100 part of 282 acres granted William Reid by patent and made over to William Haythe, and from Haythe to William Gibson, and from Gibson to Daniel by deed, land lying on both sides of Bear creek. Peter Daniel died in 1781. Sons: Richard, Peter, William, John; and daughters; Lucy Trent, Sarah Dancy and Jemima Hunter. Marriages of Daniels: 1792, William Daniel m. Edith Sutterfield: 18O1, Thomas Daniel m. Polly Jones; 18O5, Robert Daniel m. Sarah Douglass: 1811, James Daniel m. Susanna Tanner. William Daniel, Sr., brother of James, Sr., of Goochland, had a son William, who was an ensign in the Revolutionary army; he married Martha, sister of Archer Allen, member of Cumberland Committee of 1775. His son, William, Judge of Campbell and Cumberland district, married Margaret, daughter of Dr. Cornelius and Mary Briscoe-Baldwin of Winchester. Judge Daniel moved to Lynchburg in 1819 and resided at first in the town: his children, -Mary C. B., m. Mayo Cabell of Union Hill., Nelson county; -Eliza, m. William J. Lewis Cabell (son of Dr. Geo. In a message dated 8/9/2004 8:21:36 PM Eastern Daylight Time, jclarke@rose.net <mailto:jclarke@rose.net> writes: This is the James DANIELL and Elizabeth WOODSON family....We know that James and Elizabeth had Benjamin Woodson DANIEL who married Nancy GOUGE and Mary DANIELL who married Reuben COOK but they also seem to have had a James DANIEL, Jr. who married Elizabeth WEST.

John, I have seen a record that states: Daniel James, lieut., 1730; d 1789. Son of Capt. James and Elizabeth (Woodson) of Goochland Co. served in Rev. War from NO. CAr.: m ca 1785 Elizabeth West.

However, I must take issue with it. I believe that James & Elizabeth WOODSON had a son James and I believe he was the James that lived in Johnston & Wake Co. in the vicinity of Benjamin Woodson DANIEL. I believe that James was guardian to the orphaned brother of BW's wife Nancy (John GOUGE) which we discussed several weeks ago. This James in Wake Co. was also alive beyond the 1789 date of death for James that married Elizabeth WEST. The James of Wake may very well have married an Elizabeth, however, based on some deed records I've seen.

The James that married Elizabeth WEST had some very prominent Brunswick Co., VA, associations. He had some property transactions in Halifax with Peter DANIEL and John DANIEL, Jr. Howell ALLEN who hailed from Brunswick was co-executor of James' will. The Halifax 1790 cencus lists Elizabeth, James' widow & West living adjacent to Buckner DANIEL. Later in Rowan Co. West is seen dealing with Peter DANIEL, son Paul and Sion DANIEL.
