About Edward Daniels

Accident No. 19. June 4th, Edward Daniels, a timberman, was killed by falling down No. 5 shaft from the 49th to the 52nd level, Calumet mine.

Stephen Halley and John Jadrick, who were with Daniels, at the inquest held before Coroner Sowden, testified substantially as follows: “We had got through our work at the 50th level and had started up the ladderway to the 49th level. When up about half way the miners in the 50th level blasted three holes, and the concussion from the blast extinguished our lamps, and when we reached the 49th level Halley said, 'Stand still until we get a light.' Daniels asked, 'Where are you, Stephen?' and at once fell down the shaft.”

They at once secured a light and went down to the 52nd level and found the deceased, who breathed his last shortly afterward.

The jury returned the following verdict: “We, the jury, find that Edward Daniels came to his death by falling from the 49th level to the 52nd level in No. 5 shaft, Calumet mine, on the 4th day of June, 1897, while in the discharge of his duties."

Death of Captain Ed Daniels.

The old saying that misfortunes never come singly was never more strikingly illustrated than yesterday, when the death of Abram Jacobson, in a mine accident io the forenoon, was followed by that of Captain Ed Daniels, late in the afternoon. Captain Daniels was one of the oldest and best-known mining men in this vicinity and had spent the greater part of his life working underground.

He was killed by falling from the 40th to the 51st levels of No. 5 shaft, Calumet branch. Mine inspector Hall, after looking into the case, notified coroner Sowden, who empaneled the following jury to sit on the inquest: George Wright, James McCormick, Martin Effinger, William S. Bennetts, Dugald McKinnon and A. Pollock.

The facts, or what could be obtained, were brought out at the inquest. The jury viewed the remains and then heard the testimony of the witnesses.

There were only two witnesses, Stephen Halley and John Jadrick. They stated that they, in company with the deceased, started from the 51st level, to climb to surface on the ladders. Captain Daniels was ahead. They walked up to the 40th level and when they reached the ladder platform their lights went out on account of some smoke which had been occasioned by blasting nearby.

One of the witnesses said not to go any farther until they got a light, when they heard a dull thud and Captain Daniels had disappeared and fallen down the shaft. They went in search and the body was found at the 51st level. Life was not extinct, but the captain breathed his last shortly afterward.

These were the only witnesses examined and the jury returned the following verdict: "We, the jury, find that the deceased came to his death by falling from the 49th to the 51st level in No. 5 shaft, Calumet mine, on the 4th day of June, 1897, while in the discharge of his regular duties."

Captain Daniels leaves a wife and family of grown-up children. He was 74 years of age. His wife has been living at Ishpeming, but is expected on the evening train.

The funeral will leave the late residence of the deceased in Sixth street at 3 o'clock tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon. Services at the Calumet M. E. church and interment at the Lake View cemetery. The deceased was a member of One and All Lodge, No. 272, Sons of St. George and Red Jacket Tribe, I. O. R. M.
