About Edward Nicoll Fenno

He was born in Quissett, now Falmouth, Mass. In 1887, he purchased 190 acres of land in Quisset to build his summer estate called "Makatiwik" now known as Fenno House. The estate was purchased in 1968 by the WHOI to become part of the Quisset campus.

Edward was a member of the New England Historic Genealogical Society. He joined December 4, 1895. Edward attended the preparatory department of the Chauncy Hall School, Mr. Sullivan's School, and the Boston Latin School, and entered Harvard College, where he was graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1866. He received from Harvard the degree of Master of Arts in 1871.

Immediately after leaving college he eentered the employ of Fenno & Childs, commission merchants in the wool business, a firm of which his father was a partner. He remained with this firm, through its various changes of personnel and name, Fenno, Abbott & Company, Fenno, Son & Company, Fenno & Manning, and Fenno Brothers & Childs, succeeding his father as a partner. He retired from business in 1900. He lived in Boston until early in 1895, when he moved to Falmouth.

He was always interested in sports. During his college career he was a member of his class crew and rowed on the Harvard crew which defeated Yale on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester in 1866. In later life he was an ardent golfer and fisherman, and up to a few years ago engaged regularly in rowing. He had been officially connected with many corporations. At the time of his death was vice president and trustee of the Provident Institution for Savings and a trustee of the Vincent Memorial Hospital. For over forty years was a vestryman of Trinity Church (Protestant Episcopal) in Boston, retiring two years ago. He was a Republican.
