The Garfield family descends from Edward Garfield (1583-1672), the first of the Garfield family to leave England for the New World, and the forefather for most, if not all, of the people bearing or connected to the Garfield name in the American colonies.
Edward Garfield was born July 28, 1583 in Hillmorton, Warwickshire, England and baptized there in 1583. He emigrated to the Puritan colony of Massachusetts probably in the Winthrop Fleet of 1630. (3) He died on June 14, 1672 at an advanced age and his will was probated on July 11, 1672. (1) He was also known as Edward Gearfield.

Born about 1595, died 14 Jun 1672, Watertown, MA, aged 97y. His name was on the list of land grantees of Watertown in 1636. He received 30 acres. In the First Inventory of land in Watertown, he had a homestall of 6 acres bounded by Miles Ives and Thomas Arnold. He also held 2 of meadow on the river, 6 in Pond Meadow next to his great divident, 7 of plowland in lot 105 of the Further Plain, 4 in lot 33 of the Hither Plain, 5 of meadow in lot 84 of the Remote Meadows, 4 more in lot 109, 30 of upland in lot 2 of Division 2, and 100 of upland bounded by John Whitney and Edmund Lewis. He was selectman of Watertown in 1637, 1654, and 1661 and also constable in 1661. He made a will 30 Dec 1668, Watertown, MA. Assume age at death was 77, not 97 (or possibly 79). However, both Bond and Pope accept the age as 97 and create a second Edward, son of this one, either as the fa- ther of "Edward's" children or as a complete dead end. His will was proved 11 Jul 1672, Middlesex Co, MA. Will: mentions sons Samuel, Joseph, and Benjamin, daughters Rebecca Mixter and Abi- gail, grandchildren Sarah Parkhurst and Sarah & Ephraim Garfield, and wife. Married first, about 1622, Rebecca JOHNSON? born about 1606, died 16 Apr 1661, Watertown, MA, aged ~55y. Married second, 1 Sep 1661, Watertown, MA, Johanna, died 1677.
